Tooth discoloration comes in numerous colors and sizes, and can be caused by a variety of factors both internal and external. The appearance of a discolored area often offers a hint as to its origins. Discolorations that are a "chalky" shade of white or brown might be caused by prolonged, excessive exposure to fluoride during childhood, while black or brown stains might indicate trauma as a possible cause. Regardless of the reason the discoloration is present; many people find its presence undesirable.
What is Enamel Microabrasion?
At B.J. Myers DDS & Associates, our dentists can perform a procedure called enamel microabrasion, which is a process used to remove discolorations - or stains - from teeth. The procedure is easily conducted: your dentist will first determine which teeth are to be treated and isolate them, usually through the use of a rubber dam. They then rub a chemical compound on the affected tooth in order to remove shallow discolorations and stains.
Is Enamel Microabrasion Guaranteed to Remove Discolorations from my Teeth?
As discussed above, tooth discoloration can be caused by a multitude of factors. The success of enamel microabrasion is heavily impacted by the type of stain present. It should be noted, for example, that the process does not improve the appearance of teeth that have discoloration caused by trauma or certain medications. Teeth that are covered with white discolorations are similarly tough to improve, while superficial dark, brown stains are more easily removed in the majority of cases.
While we cannot tell you exactly how well enamel microabrasion will work for your teeth, the good news is that the process is a safe and non-invasive procedure to whiten and brighten your smile! Call us today to learn more or schedule your treatment.
Our patients come back to us because we truly care about the care you receieve. Here are some of the things our amazing patients have to say about us:
The staff are super friendly and made me feel really comfortable. I had to get implants for two "baby" teeth i still had left b/c i never grew permanent teeth in their place. I had to be sedated for the operation and expected to be out of commission for a couples days and in a lot of pain the following week. However, that evening I felt surprisingly good with minimal pain.
Dr. Myers is the best. I have been a patient of his for about 5 years and every time I come he makes me feel super relaxed and at ease. I have had everything from a simple cleaning to crowns and everything is virtually painless afterwards. I would recommend him to any person who is seeking a great dentist and staff.
